Mithuna (Gemini) and Kataka (Cancer) sit next to each other in the zodiac, and that closeness gives this pairing two quite different readings depending on which partner holds which sign. This page explains the rashi-level results in Sinhala porondam and Tamil porutham in both directions, and why the two birth stars matter far more.
Which rashi is meant, and how is the count made?
The rashi used in marriage matching is the moon sign (chandra rashi), the sign the Moon occupied at birth in the sidereal zodiac used in Sri Lanka. It is not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscopes, so your Mithuna or Kataka here may differ from the sign you usually read.
The rashi result depends on counting from the bride's sign to the groom's. From Mithuna to Kataka the count is 2, because Kataka is the very next sign. From Kataka back to Mithuna the count is 12. Because the count changes with direction, the same two signs can give different results, which is why both arrangements are explained separately below.
How does it read with the bride in Mithuna and the groom in Kataka?
With a count of 2, the rashi item is not obtained in both the Sinhala rashi porondam and the Tamil rasi porutham.
The rashi lords are Mercury for Mithuna and the Moon for Kataka. Their relationship is one friendly, one hostile: one planet regards the other as a friend while the regard is not returned. Because of this mixed relationship, rashyadhipathi porondam and rasi adhipathi porutham are partly obtained.
Vashya, which looks at natural attraction between the signs, is not obtained in either system for this arrangement. These are only three items among many, and they describe the signs in general rather than the two individuals.
What changes with the bride in Kataka and the groom in Mithuna?
Reversing the roles gives a count of 12, and the picture shifts. In Sinhala porondam the rashi item is partly obtained, while in Tamil porutham the rasi item is obtained. This is a good example of how the two traditions can weigh the same count a little differently.
The rashi lords are the same pair, the Moon for the bride and Mercury for the groom, with the same one friendly, one hostile relationship. So rashyadhipathi and rasi adhipathi remain partly obtained.
Vashya is again not obtained in both systems. Overall, this direction reads more favourably at the rashi level, but the birth stars still settle the matter.
Why do the birth stars decide the real match?
Each rashi covers nine nakshatra quarters, so one Mithuna partner and one Kataka partner can meet in 81 star-quarter combinations. Most porondam and porutham items are read from the stars, so outcomes vary widely within the same pair of signs.
With the bride in Mithuna and groom in Kataka, none of the 81 combinations reach 8 of 10 porutham, 51% are weak in Tamil matching, 4% show a Tamil rajju clash, and 30% pass Sinhala porondam (excluding the weekday item). With the bride in Kataka and groom in Mithuna, 32% reach 8 of 10 porutham, 4% are weak, 4% show a rajju clash, and 79% pass Sinhala porondam.
