Question 1

Where exactly is Makandawa Rainforest in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Makandawa Rainforest is located near Kitulgala in the Kegalle District of Sabaragamuwa Province, approximately 80 kilometres east of Colombo. It borders the Kelani River and forms part of the wet-zone forest belt in central-western Sri Lanka.

Question 2

Do I need a guide to enter Makandawa Forest?

Accepted Answer

A local guide is strongly recommended. The trail network is not formally signposted and the dense forest canopy makes orientation difficult for first-time visitors. Guides also dramatically improve wildlife sightings, particularly for birds and reptiles. Most guesthouses and eco-lodges in Kitulgala can arrange a reliable guide.

Question 3

What birds can I see in Makandawa Rainforest?

Accepted Answer

Makandawa is home to over 140 recorded bird species including several Sri Lankan endemics such as the Sri Lanka blue magpie, red-faced malkoha, green-billed coucal, and the elusive serendib scops owl. The best birding is in the early morning between 6 am and 9 am, when mixed-species feeding flocks move through the canopy.

Question 4

Is Makandawa Rainforest good for a day trip from Kandy?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Kitulgala is around 45–60 kilometres from Kandy by road, making a half-day forest walk and a return trip feasible in a single day. Combining the forest walk with white-water rafting on the Kelani River makes for a full and varied day out from either Kandy or Colombo.

Question 5

Are there leeches in Makandawa Forest?

Accepted Answer

Land leeches are common in Sri Lankan wet-zone forests, including Makandawa, particularly during and after rain. Wearing long trousers tucked into socks and applying insect repellent around your ankles greatly reduces contact. Leech socks, available at outdoor shops and some guesthouses in Kitulgala, offer the most reliable protection.

Question 6

Can I see leopards at Makandawa Rainforest?

Accepted Answer

Leopards have been recorded in the area through camera-trap surveys, confirming their presence in the wider forest ecosystem. However, sightings on visitor trails are very rare. The mammals you are more likely to encounter include purple-faced langurs, toque macaques, and barking deer.

Question 7

How is Makandawa Rainforest different from Sinharaja?

Accepted Answer

Both are Sri Lankan wet-zone rainforests with high levels of endemic wildlife, but Sinharaja is a much larger UNESCO World Heritage Site with more formal visitor infrastructure. Makandawa is smaller, quieter, and less formally managed, offering a more intimate experience. Serious naturalists often visit both, as their species lists partly overlap but each has distinct highlights.
