When a bride and groom are both Kataka (Cancer), Sri Lankan marriage matching starts from a shared sign, which shapes the rashi-level results in a particular way. This page explains what the calculator finds for this pairing in both Sinhala porondam and Tamil porutham, and why the final picture always depends on the two birth stars.
What does a Kataka and Kataka rashi match mean?
The rashi used in porondam and porutham is the moon sign (chandra rashi), worked out in the sidereal zodiac followed in Sri Lanka. It is not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscopes, so a person's Kataka here is where the Moon stood at their birth.
When both partners share Kataka, the rashi count from bride to groom is 1, meaning they sit in the very same sign. Because the sign is identical, the result is the same whichever way round you look at it: bride Kataka with groom Kataka reads exactly like the reverse. In both the Sinhala rashi porondam and the Tamil rasi porutham, the calculator marks this item as obtained.
How do the rashi lords and vashya work out?
Kataka is ruled by the Moon, so both partners share the same rashi lord. Rather than asking whether two different planets are friends, the calculator is comparing a planet with itself, and it marks the rashi lord item (rashyadhipathi in Sinhala, rasi adhipathi in Tamil) as obtained in both traditions.
Vashya, sometimes written vasya, looks at a different kind of affinity between the two signs. For a same-sign Kataka pairing, the calculator marks vashya as not obtained in both the Sinhala and Tamil systems. This is one item among many, and it is read together with everything else in the chart rather than on its own.
Why do the birth stars matter more than the rashi?
The rashi results above are shared by every Kataka couple, but the real match is decided by each person's birth star (nakshatra) and its quarter. Kataka spans the last quarter of Punarvasu, all of Pushya and all of Ashlesha, giving 81 possible star-quarter combinations for two Kataka partners.
Those combinations produce very different outcomes. Across them, the calculator finds that 94% pass Sinhala porondam when the weekday item is set aside. On the Tamil side, only 5% reach 8 of 10 porutham, 46% come out weak overall, and 41% show a rajju clash. Two Kataka couples can therefore receive quite different readings.
How should you check your own match?
Because the sign alone tells only part of the story, the most useful step is to run the calculator with full birth details for both people: date, exact time and place of birth. This lets it find each person's moon sign and birth star quarter accurately, and then work through every porondam or porutham item for that specific pair.
Online results are a helpful starting point for understanding a match, but they are not a substitute for personal guidance. For marriage decisions, families in Sri Lanka traditionally consult a trusted family astrologer, who can read the full horoscopes in context and explain the results with care.
