Question 1

What is Grewia damine?

Accepted Answer

Grewia damine is a flowering shrub or small tree belonging to the family Malvaceae, recognised in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue. It grows primarily in the dry and intermediate zones of the island and is referenced in indigenous healing traditions. The species is catalogued under the reference LK94005711 in Lakpura's documentation of Sri Lankan medicinal plants.

Question 2

What are the medicinal uses of Grewia damine in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Related species within the Grewia genus are traditionally associated with tonic, febrifuge, and diuretic properties in classical Ayurvedic literature. Roots, bark, and leaf materials are the parts most commonly referenced in traditional formulations. Any medicinal use should be undertaken only under the supervision of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 3

Where does Grewia damine grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is associated with the dry zone and intermediate zone of Sri Lanka, typically found in scrub forests, along forest margins, and in secondary vegetation. It favours lowland and lower mid-elevation habitats with seasonal rainfall patterns characteristic of those regions.

Question 4

Which family does Grewia damine belong to?

Accepted Answer

Grewia damine belongs to the family Malvaceae under current botanical classification. It was historically placed within Tiliaceae before molecular taxonomy led to a reorganisation of that family group. The broader Grewia genus contains dozens of species distributed across tropical Asia and Africa.

Question 5

Is Grewia damine endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The Grewia genus is found widely across tropical and subtropical Asia and Africa, so the genus itself is not endemic to Sri Lanka. The precise distribution and endemic status of the specific species damine is subject to ongoing botanical review as taxonomists continue to assess species boundaries within the genus.

Question 6

How is Grewia damine used in traditional Sri Lankan medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan indigenous medicine, plants like Grewia damine are typically incorporated into compound preparations rather than used as single-herb remedies. Classical texts and regional practitioners reference members of the Grewia genus for conditions including fever and urinary disorders, with decoctions and powdered forms being common preparation methods.

Question 7

Where can I learn more about Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plants?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains official records of the island's indigenous medicinal plants and operates research facilities dedicated to their study. The Institute of Indigenous Medicine at the University of Kelaniya is a leading academic centre for Ayurvedic research in the country. Visiting Ayurvedic wellness centres and botanical gardens on the island can also provide hands-on insight into this tradition.
