Question 1

What is Hunu Palapala in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Hunu Palapala is a traditional Sri Lankan folk belief system that interprets omens based on where a gecko (hunu) falls on a person's body. Each body part is said to correspond to a specific prediction about the person's future, ranging from wealth and good health to conflict or illness. The practice has roots in classical Sinhala Shastra and has been passed down through generations.

Question 2

Is gecko falling on you good or bad luck in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It depends entirely on which body part the gecko touches, according to Hunu Palapala. Some contact points are considered auspicious — for example, a gecko falling on the forehead is associated with gaining rank or honour, while one falling on the left ankle is linked to fame. Others, such as contact with the nose or right foot, are interpreted as warnings of illness.

Question 3

What does it mean when a gecko falls on your head?

Accepted Answer

In Hunu Palapala tradition, a gecko falling on the head is considered an inauspicious sign, associated with conflict or deadly fear — meaning potential threats to one's safety or the onset of serious disputes. By contrast, a gecko on the forehead carries a more positive reading, suggesting advancement in status or rank.

Question 4

What does a gecko falling on your chest mean?

Accepted Answer

According to Hunu Palapala, contact on the chest or breast area is linked to financial gain and high social acceptance. It is generally considered a favourable omen, suggesting incoming material benefit or recognition from others.

Question 5

Where does the Hunu Palapala tradition come from?

Accepted Answer

The tradition forms part of a broader body of Sinhala Shastra — traditional knowledge systems that interpret natural signs as omens. Similar gecko-omen beliefs exist across South and Southeast Asia, pointing to a shared cultural heritage. In Sri Lanka, these interpretations have been preserved in Ola leaf manuscripts and printed almanacs known as Litha.

Question 6

Do people in Sri Lanka still believe in gecko predictions?

Accepted Answer

Belief in Hunu Palapala varies widely in contemporary Sri Lanka. Some individuals, particularly in traditional households, take gecko omens seriously and may consult an elder or almanac for guidance. Others regard the practice as cultural folklore — an interesting piece of heritage rather than a literal guide to the future. Both attitudes coexist comfortably in everyday Sri Lankan life.

Question 7

Are there books in Sinhala about gecko omens and folk predictions?

Accepted Answer

Yes, several Sinhala-language publications cover Hunu Palapala alongside related folk divination traditions such as dream interpretation and almanac-based predictions. These titles are available through specialist booksellers and cultural publishers in Sri Lanka.
