Question 1

What is Dick Oya / Dikoya in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Dikoya (historically spelled Dick Oya) is a tea-estate village in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, situated near Hatton in Nuwara Eliya District. It is known for its high-grown tea plantations, colonial bungalow accommodation, and proximity to Adam's Peak.

Question 2

How far is Dikoya from Colombo?

Accepted Answer

By road, Dikoya is approximately 150 km from Colombo, which typically takes four to five hours via the A7 highway through Avissawella. By train, the journey from Colombo Fort to Hatton (the nearest station) takes around five to six hours on the scenic hill-country line.

Question 3

What are the best things to do near Dikoya?

Accepted Answer

Popular activities include guided tea-estate walks, visiting working tea factories, birdwatching in the montane forest edges, hiking toward Adam's Peak from Dalhousie, and day trips along the mountain railway corridor toward Ella. The area also makes a convenient base for visiting Horton Plains National Park.

Question 4

What is the weather like in Dikoya?

Accepted Answer

Dikoya sits at roughly 1,200 metres elevation, giving it a cool climate year-round with temperatures typically between 14°C and 24°C. The driest and clearest periods are January to March and July to September. The south-west monsoon brings heavy rain from May onward, though the mist and low cloud can add to the atmosphere.

Question 5

Are there plantation bungalows to rent in Dikoya?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Dikoya has several colonial tea-estate bungalows that can be rented on a private-hire basis, meaning your group has exclusive use of the house along with a caretaker and cook. Boutique hotel options are also available in the area. Booking well in advance is advisable during peak season (December to January) and Sri Lankan school holidays.

Question 6

Can I visit Adam's Peak from Dikoya?

Accepted Answer

The main trailhead for Adam's Peak is at Nallathanniya (Dalhousie), roughly an hour's drive from Hatton. Dikoya's cooler altitude and proximity make it a practical base for the pre-dawn climb, which most pilgrims and trekkers begin around 2–3 a.m. to reach the summit by sunrise.

Question 7

Is Dikoya good for birdwatching?

Accepted Answer

The habitat around Dikoya, where open tea estate meets remnant montane forest, supports a good range of Sri Lankan endemic bird species. Early morning walks along estate roads and forest edges can yield sightings of yellow-eared bulbul, dull-blue flycatcher, Sri Lanka white-eye, and various raptors riding thermals above the valley.
