Question 1

What is Derris benthamii used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Derris benthamii has been used in Sri Lankan ayurvedic and traditional practice primarily for topical skin complaints and preparations targeting inflammatory or parasitic conditions. The plant's roots and stems contain rotenone, a compound with known insecticidal and fish-stupefying properties that has guided its traditional applications. Preparations require careful handling in line with traditional knowledge about safe dosage.

Question 2

Where does Derris benthamii grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows in humid lowland forests and along stream margins, mainly in Sri Lanka's wet zone and parts of the intermediate zone. It is a climbing vine that uses surrounding vegetation for support, and is commonly found in secondary forest edges below around 700 metres elevation. It is not cultivated commercially and is gathered from the wild.

Question 3

What family does Derris benthamii belong to?

Accepted Answer

Derris benthamii belongs to the family Fabaceae, the legume or bean family, one of the largest plant families in the world. Within Fabaceae it is classified in the tribe Millettieae, which includes several other tropical Asian climbing and shrubby legumes. The genus Derris is distributed across tropical South and Southeast Asia.

Question 4

Is Derris benthamii an endemic plant of Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, Derris benthamii is not endemic to Sri Lanka. It is distributed more broadly across tropical South and Southeast Asia. However, it has been formally documented as part of Sri Lanka's catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants, reflecting its documented use in the island's traditional healing systems.

Question 5

What is rotenone and why is it associated with Derris species?

Accepted Answer

Rotenone is a naturally occurring isoflavonoid compound found in the roots and stems of several Derris species. It is toxic to insects and fish while having relatively low acute toxicity to mammals when used in traditional quantities. It has historically been used as a natural insecticide and, in subsistence fishing communities, as a fish-stupefying agent to assist in catching. Research into rotenone derivatives continues for potential pharmaceutical applications.

Question 6

How can I learn more about Sri Lankan medicinal plants when visiting?

Accepted Answer

Herb and spice gardens near Kandy and along the southern coast offer guided introductions to commonly used medicinal plants, including demonstrations of traditional preparation methods. Guided forest walks in places like the Sinharaja Forest Reserve give a sense of the wild habitat where species such as Derris benthamii naturally grow. Ayurvedic retreats across the island provide more immersive experiences with trained practitioners.

Question 7

Is Derris benthamii safe to use without professional guidance?

Accepted Answer

Plants containing rotenone should not be self-administered without guidance from a qualified traditional practitioner or physician. While rotenone has a long history of traditional use, inappropriate preparation or dosage can be harmful. Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda and the Institute of Indigenous Medicine provide the institutional framework for safe, regulated traditional medicine practice on the island.

Question 8

What is the significance of Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant catalogue?

Accepted Answer

The catalogue maintained by Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda documents hundreds of plant species formally recognised in the island's traditional medicine system, assigning each a standardised code. It serves both as a knowledge-preservation tool and as a basis for conservation planning, ensuring that species with medicinal value are monitored before their wild populations become depleted. Derris benthamii is listed under the code LK94006398.
