Question 1

What is the Sinhala name for Cassia siamea?

Accepted Answer

Cassia siamea is known in Sinhala as Ehela (ඇහැල). It is listed under this name in Sri Lanka's official Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia maintained by the Department of Ayurveda. The tree is widely recognised by this name in both rural communities and traditional medical practice.

Question 2

What are the medicinal uses of Cassia siamea?

Accepted Answer

Traditional Ayurvedic practice in Sri Lanka uses the leaves, bark, and seeds of Cassia siamea for purposes including fever management, skin conditions, mild laxative action, and as a general tonic. Phytochemical research has also identified potentially antimalarial compounds in the plant, though these findings are at laboratory stage and not approved as medical treatments.

Question 3

Is Cassia siamea native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Cassia siamea is not originally native to Sri Lanka — it is believed to originate from Southeast Asia, possibly Thailand and surrounding regions. However, it has been naturalised across the island for many centuries and is now so thoroughly integrated into the landscape that it is commonly treated as a local species.

Question 4

Is Cassia siamea the same as senna?

Accepted Answer

No. Cassia siamea is a large tree, while commercial senna comes from Senna alexandrina (formerly Cassia senna), which is a smaller shrubby plant. They are related within the Fabaceae family but are distinct species with different chemical compositions and different traditional uses.

Question 5

Where does Cassia siamea grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The tree grows widely across Sri Lanka's low country and intermediate dry zone, thriving in poor laterite soils and tolerating drought. It is commonly found lining roads, in temple grounds, and at the edges of dry-zone forests, particularly in the North Central, Uva, and Southern provinces.

Question 6

Can I see Cassia siamea on a visit to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the tree is common enough that most travellers will encounter it without seeking it out, especially along rural roads and near dry-zone heritage sites. Ayurvedic herb gardens attached to wellness resorts in Kandy, Matale, and Galle often include labelled specimens, making those gardens good places to learn to identify the tree.

Question 7

Are there any risks in using Cassia siamea as a herbal remedy?

Accepted Answer

The plant contains bioactive alkaloids that can cause adverse effects in large doses or interact with certain medications, including anti-diabetic drugs. Pregnant women and people with liver conditions should avoid using preparations from this plant without consulting a qualified practitioner. It should not be used as a substitute for medical treatment of serious conditions.
