Question 1

What is Cassia absus used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic and Unani medicine, Cassia absus seeds (known as chaksu) are primarily used in preparations for eye disorders such as conjunctivitis. The plant is also cited for antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in traditional texts. Any therapeutic use should be guided by a qualified practitioner.

Question 2

Where does Cassia absus grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Cassia absus is found in the dry and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka, typically growing as a roadside herb or in disturbed agricultural land. It favours warm, seasonally dry conditions common to the island's lowland areas.

Question 3

Is Cassia absus the same as Cassia senna or Senna alata?

Accepted Answer

No, Cassia absus is a distinct species, though it belongs to the same broad Fabaceae family as Cassia senna and Senna alata. The genus Cassia has been extensively revised by botanists, and Cassia absus is sometimes reclassified as Chamaecrista absus in modern taxonomic literature.

Question 4

What part of Cassia absus is used medicinally?

Accepted Answer

The seeds of Cassia absus are considered the most medicinally active part of the plant in traditional systems. Leaves and other plant parts are also used in some preparations, depending on the condition being addressed.

Question 5

Are there any scientific studies on Cassia absus?

Accepted Answer

Laboratory studies have identified flavonoids, alkaloids, and tannins in Cassia absus and found some evidence of antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity. Clinical human trials remain limited, and the plant is not a common ingredient in modern pharmaceutical products outside traditional medicine contexts.

Question 6

Is Cassia absus native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Cassia absus is widely distributed across South Asia, Southeast Asia, and parts of Africa, so it is not exclusively native to Sri Lanka. However, it is naturalised on the island and has been incorporated into Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practice as part of the country's rich indigenous plant pharmacopoeia.

Question 7

Can tourists visit Ayurvedic plant gardens in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, several spice and herbal gardens across Sri Lanka — particularly in the Kandy and Matale districts — welcome visitors and provide guided introductions to medicinal plants including those in the Cassia family. Many Ayurvedic wellness centres also offer educational programmes on traditional Sri Lankan herbalism.
