Rock Chalet, Kaduwela, Sri Lanka
Nestled within the Koratota Rubber Estate along the Hanwella–Avissawella road, Rock Chalet is a quietly elegant retreat that manages to feel worlds away from Colombo despite being only approximately 45 minutes by road. The property is hidden amidst a rubber estate and set within beautifully manicured gardens, its driveway lined by a landscape of straight and stately rubber trees that signal a genuine change of pace from city life.
The drive out from Colombo takes guests past coconut and rubber plantations, paddy fields and old buildings — a gentle introduction to the countryside before the estate comes into view. Visitors can reach Kaduwela town by private vehicle or by bus, making the property reasonably accessible for those travelling without their own transport.
Accommodation
Rock Chalet offers five named guestrooms — the Dolomite, Termaleen, Jespa, Momosa and Arora — each furnished to convey an ambience of luxury and comfort. A large king-sized four-poster canopy bed anchors each room, giving the spaces an elegant charm that suits the surrounding estate. Mornings here begin with the sounds of birdsong drifting in from the expanse of the Koratota Rubber Estate, a reminder of how thoroughly the property conceals its proximity to the city.
Set apart from the main buildings is a room with a notable history: it is said to have sheltered Braise Girdle, an Englishman who was wanted by law enforcement in Ceylon during an island-wide manhunt. The room has since been refurbished and modernised, and now offers guests maximum privacy and seclusion. It is elegantly equipped with antique furniture, a spacious bathroom, and a private veranda overlooking the surrounding grounds. A small bridge runs over clear water flowing through the estate nearby, and private dining with room service is available.
Dining and Leisure
Dining at Rock Chalet is described as a memorable experience in its own right. The dining space is airy and open, and the kitchen team is geared towards producing delicious meals throughout the stay. For evenings with family, a barbecue grill allows for private outdoor barbecues under the estate sky.
An outdoor swimming pool offers a relaxing retreat during the day, while Ayurvedic treatments are available for guests seeking a more restorative dimension to their stay. Together, these amenities make Rock Chalet a well-rounded base for those wanting calm, greenery and comfort within easy reach of Colombo.
