Frangipani Tree, Galle, Sri Lanka
Tucked away on the western end of Thalpe bay, The Frangipani Tree is a small and deeply considered beach sanctuary — ten exquisitely furnished suites arranged across four separate villas on a long, secluded stretch of the Sri Lankan coastline. The property sits along Matara Road, Thalpe, just 8 km from the historic Galle Fort, yet it feels entirely removed from the world beyond its gardens.
The character of the place rests on what its creators describe as an improbable juxtaposition: simplicity and luxury coexisting in full view of the turquoise Indian Ocean. Sun, sand, and the shade of frangipani trees are as much a part of the experience as the culinary, sensuous, and spiritual indulgences the property offers its guests.
The Suites and Villas
Each of the ten suites is airy and oriented towards the ocean, offering stunning views from covered terraces and verandahs furnished with sun beds and private dining tables. Inside, the rooms are appointed with modern, custom furnishings — four-poster beds dressed in beautiful linens, sofa beds, armchairs, and desks featuring Bawa-designed leather chairs. Every suite also has an elegant contemporary bathroom with a private garden, bathtub, shower, hairdryer, and designer amenities.
Two of the villas — Hawksbill and Leatherback — each offer two bedrooms with panoramic ocean views and generous outdoor living spaces. Leatherback is positioned directly beachfront and includes pool loungers alongside its private dining areas. Both villas are equipped with air-conditioning, ceiling fans, an iPod station, and access to high-speed WiFi.
Impeccable personal service is woven into every aspect of a stay, attending to the particular needs and whims of each guest throughout their visit.
The Beach and Natural Setting
The beach at The Frangipani Tree is secluded and picturesque, and in season it becomes a nesting ground for sea turtles — hawksbill and leatherback among them — which return to lay their eggs on this quiet stretch of shore. It is a reminder that the property sits within a living coastal environment, not merely beside it.
Getting There
The nearest international gateway is Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport, located about 30 km north of the city. The transfer from the airport to The Frangipani Tree by air-conditioned car or van takes approximately three to four hours. The property is pleased to arrange dedicated transfers upon receipt of flight details.
