This is a Sinhala translation of Fyodor Dostoevsky's short Russian novel The Gambler (Игрок), made by Dedigama V. Rodrigo. The entire text is in Sinhala, so it will suit readers of that language rather than buyers looking for an English edition.

Dostoevsky drew heavily on his own life in writing it. He was at the time deeply addicted to gambling, roulette in particular, and under severe financial pressure; the book was written and finished in a very short space of time. That closeness between the author's circumstances and his subject is part of what the novel has always been read for.

Dedigama V. Rodrigo was among the Sinhala translators who brought Russian fiction to readers in Sri Lanka, and his version of this novel has appeared before under other imprints. It is now issued by M. D. Gunasena & Co. of Colombo, with the official permission of the Russian embassy.

For a reader in Sri Lanka or a Sinhala speaker abroad, this is a chance to read Dostoevsky in Sinhala rather than through English. It will also interest anyone building a shelf of Russian literature in Sinhala translation, or following Rodrigo's work as a translator.
