Kalu's Hideaway stands at Walawegama on the edge of the Udawalawe reservoir, on a five-acre plot of land with a river flowing past the grounds. Udawalawe town is 5.1 km away and Embilipitiya 11.5 km, and the entrance to Udawalawe National Park is about a five-minute drive. The hotel is owned by the retired Sri Lankan cricketer Romesh Kaluwitarana, known the world over as little Kalu.
The hotel is about 260 km by road from Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, a drive of 3.5 to 4 hours depending on traffic, and it makes a convenient stop for travellers heading on to Yala or Kataragama. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Kalu's Hideaway.
The main building holds five modern, spacious rooms with en-suite bathrooms, and there is also a private upper deck suite and two separate chalets. Rooms are furnished with wooden furniture, mosquito nets and ceiling fans, with air-conditioning if required, and the upper-floor double room has its own private patio looking out over the grounds.
The main restaurant serves a mix of Eastern and Western dishes with an all-day à la carte menu, looking out over a paddy field, and barbecues are held in the evenings. Near the restaurant is a Japanese-style TV room in the lobby, and outside there is a swimming pool with a Jacuzzi. The grounds and riverside also suit camping, team-building and group trips.
The hotel can arrange safari jeep excursions into Udawalawe National Park, where herds of wild elephants are the main draw. Other places of interest nearby include Maduwanwela Walauwa, the former residence of a local nobleman, and Wawulpane cave with its colony of bats.
