Question 1

What is Trichosanthes cucumerina used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic medicine, the snake gourd plant is used to address digestive disorders, fever, skin inflammations, and bilious conditions. Different parts of the plant — fruit, leaves, seeds, and roots — are employed in different preparations. It is generally classified as cooling and bitter in Ayurvedic terms.

Question 2

What is the Sinhala name for Trichosanthes cucumerina?

Accepted Answer

In Sinhala, Trichosanthes cucumerina is commonly called 'pathola.' This name distinguishes it clearly from bitter gourd, which is called 'karawila' and is a separate species despite also belonging to the cucumber family.

Question 3

Can you eat snake gourd raw?

Accepted Answer

The unripe fruit is generally cooked rather than eaten raw, as cooking reduces its mild bitterness and improves palatability. In Sri Lankan cuisine it is typically prepared as a curry or stir-fry. The ripe, orange-red fruit is less commonly eaten but the seed pulp is sometimes used as a food colouring.

Question 4

Is snake gourd good for diabetes?

Accepted Answer

Some laboratory and animal studies have reported hypoglycaemic activity in Trichosanthes cucumerina extracts, which has generated interest in its potential role in blood-sugar management. However, robust clinical evidence in human trials remains limited. Anyone managing diabetes should consult a qualified healthcare professional before using plant-based remedies.

Question 5

Where can I buy snake gourd in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Fresh snake gourd is widely available in local markets (pola) across Sri Lanka, particularly in the wet zone lowlands. It is sold at weekly rural markets and in most urban vegetable sections. The season can vary slightly by region, but it is generally available throughout the year in warmer parts of the island.

Question 6

What is the difference between snake gourd and ridge gourd?

Accepted Answer

Snake gourd (Trichosanthes cucumerina) and ridge gourd (Luffa acutangula) are both cucurbits grown in Sri Lanka but are quite different plants. Snake gourd produces a much longer, thinner, often coiled fruit with a smoother skin, while ridge gourd has a shorter, ribbed fruit. They also have distinct flavour profiles and somewhat different medicinal applications in Ayurveda.

Question 7

How is snake gourd cultivated in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is typically grown from seed during the dry-to-wet season transition, trained over a trellis or fence to support its climbing habit. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil with moderate moisture. In Sri Lanka's home gardens it is often intercropped with other vegetables and matures relatively quickly, with fruits ready to harvest within weeks of flowering.
