Question 1

Can I take a domestic flight in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sri Lanka has several operational domestic airports and airstrips linking Colombo with the east coast, north-central region, and the southern coast. Services are mainly operated by small turboprop aircraft and helicopters, with most routes departing from Ratmalana Airport (RML) near Colombo.

Question 2

How long does a domestic flight take in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Most domestic routes are short — typically between 30 and 60 minutes in the air. The Ratmalana-to-Batticaloa route takes around 45 minutes, while Ratmalana to Anuradhapura is closer to 30–40 minutes. This compares with three to five hours by road for the same journeys.

Question 3

Which domestic airport is closest to Kandy or the Cultural Triangle?

Accepted Answer

Sigiriya Airstrip is the closest airfield to the Cultural Triangle, handling light charter and scenic flights. Anuradhapura Airport (ACJ) is another useful entry point for the north-central heritage region. Both are reachable by small aircraft from Ratmalana Airport in Colombo.

Question 4

Are scenic flights available in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Scenic flights along the southern coastline from Koggala Airport and aerial tours over the Cultural Triangle from Sigiriya are available through charter operators. These flights typically run for 30 minutes to one hour and are booked on a charter basis rather than as scheduled services.

Question 5

Can I arrange a helicopter transfer from Colombo Airport on arrival?

Accepted Answer

Helicopter charters — including the Airbus EC130 B4 — can be arranged to depart directly from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), allowing travellers to connect to remote resorts or scenic destinations without a road transfer into the city. Advance notice and coordination are required.

Question 6

What is the baggage allowance on domestic flights in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Baggage allowances on domestic light aircraft are typically restricted to around 10–15 kg per passenger. Carry-on space is also limited. Travellers are advised to pack a smaller bag for the flight portion of their trip, with main luggage sent ahead by road if necessary.

Question 7

Are domestic flights in Sri Lanka affected by the monsoon?

Accepted Answer

Domestic flights operate under visual flight rules and are susceptible to cancellations during heavy monsoon rainfall. The south-west monsoon affects the west and south from May to September, while the north-east monsoon impacts the east and north from October to January. Building a road transfer backup into your itinerary is advisable.

Question 8

How do I get from Bandaranaike Airport to Ratmalana Airport for a domestic connection?

Accepted Answer

Ratmalana Airport is located on the southern edge of Colombo, roughly 25–35 minutes from the city centre by road in normal traffic. The drive from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Katunayake is typically 45–75 minutes depending on traffic conditions. A private transfer is the most practical option.
