Question 1

Where is Radella in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Radella is a locality in the Nuwara Eliya District of Sri Lanka's Central Province, situated along the A7 road between Hatton and Nuwara Eliya at an elevation of around 1,500 metres. It lies in the heart of the country's high-grown tea belt and is about 150 kilometres from Colombo.

Question 2

What is Radella tea?

Accepted Answer

Radella tea refers to Ceylon tea produced from the Radella estate in Sri Lanka's central highlands. It is classified as high-grown tea, known for its bright liquor and delicate, clean flavour. The estate has become particularly associated with green tea in recent years, and Radella-branded teas are exported internationally.

Question 3

How do I get to Radella from Colombo?

Accepted Answer

The most scenic route is by hill-country train from Colombo Fort to Hatton station, followed by a short drive along the A7. The train journey takes roughly four to five hours and passes through Kandy and some of Sri Lanka's most dramatic highland scenery. A private car from Colombo is also straightforward, following the expressway to Colombo outskirts before heading inland toward Kandy and then Hatton.

Question 4

What is the best time of year to visit the Sri Lanka tea country around Hatton?

Accepted Answer

January to April is generally the driest and most pleasant period for visiting the Hatton–Radella corridor, with clearer skies and good walking conditions. The southwest monsoon from May to August brings heavier rain, though the misty estate scenery has its own appeal during this period. Temperatures remain cool year-round, typically between 12°C and 22°C.

Question 5

Can I visit a tea factory near Hatton or Radella?

Accepted Answer

Yes, several tea factories in the broader area offer guided tours covering the full production process from leaf to finished tea. It is best to arrange visits in advance through your accommodation or a local tour operator, as access to working factory floors depends on production schedules and prior permission from estate management.

Question 6

Is Adam's Peak close to Radella?

Accepted Answer

Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) is approximately 20 kilometres south of the Radella–Hatton area, making it a feasible excursion for anyone staying in the district. The climb begins at Dalhousie village and is most popular during the pilgrimage season from December to May. Many travellers combine a stay in the tea country with the overnight ascent.

Question 7

Where can I buy authentic Radella green tea?

Accepted Answer

Radella green tea is available from specialist tea retailers and from brands such as Basilur, which produces a dedicated Radella Green range in various pack sizes. It can be purchased in Sri Lanka at tea boutiques, airport shops, and online through retailers including Lakpura, which stocks multiple Basilur Radella Green formats.

Question 8

Are there places to stay at Radella itself?

Accepted Answer

Accommodation directly at Radella is limited, which helps maintain the area's quiet character. The most distinctive option in the broader area is a colonial planter's bungalow let on an exclusive basis — a common and atmospheric format across the Sri Lankan highlands. Hatton town offers budget guesthouses, and Nuwara Eliya to the east has a wider range of hotels.
