Question 1

What is Ocimum americanum used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic medicine, Ocimum americanum is used primarily for respiratory complaints, digestive support, and mild antimicrobial applications. Leaf decoctions are taken for coughs and colds, while crushed leaves are applied topically to skin irritations and minor infections. The seeds, when soaked in water, produce a soothing gel used for internal complaints.

Question 2

Is Ocimum americanum the same as holy basil?

Accepted Answer

No. Although they belong to the same genus, Ocimum americanum (American or hoary basil) and Ocimum tenuiflorum (holy basil or tulsi) are distinct species with different scent profiles, leaf textures, and traditional uses. Ocimum americanum tends to have a more camphor-like fragrance, while holy basil has a sweeter, clove-like aroma and holds a more prominent ritual role in South Asian traditions.

Question 3

Where does Ocimum americanum grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows naturally in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate climatic zones, particularly in disturbed habitats such as roadsides, field margins, and home gardens. It is found across lowland and mid-elevation areas with well-drained soils and good sunlight, and is cultivated in herb gardens alongside other Ayurvedic species.

Question 4

What does Ocimum americanum smell like?

Accepted Answer

Ocimum americanum has a distinctive aromatic scent that is lighter and more camphor-like than common sweet basil. When the leaves are crushed, they release volatile oils including camphor and linalool, giving the plant a sharp, slightly medicinal fragrance that herbalists use as one of the key identification markers.

Question 5

Is Ocimum americanum recognised in Sri Lanka's official Ayurvedic system?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda formally includes Ocimum americanum in its catalog of Ayurvedic medicinal plants. The species is referenced in traditional Sinhala and Sanskrit texts on plant medicine, confirming its long-standing recognition within the island's formalised herbal healthcare framework.

Question 6

What has scientific research found about Ocimum americanum?

Accepted Answer

Laboratory studies have found that extracts and essential oils from Ocimum americanum show antimicrobial and antifungal activity, as well as antioxidant properties. Some research has also identified insecticidal and larvicidal potential. However, most studies remain at the laboratory or small-scale stage, and large clinical trials supporting specific health claims are still limited.

Question 7

How can I learn about traditional medicinal plants while visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Visitors interested in Sri Lanka's medicinal plant traditions can explore Ayurvedic wellness centres, herb farms, and spice gardens that operate as educational tourism sites. Nature reserves such as Sinharaja Forest Reserve are also rich in indigenous medicinal species. Village cultural tours in rural areas often include herb garden visits where guides explain the role of specific plants in local healthcare and daily life.
