Question 1

What is Memecylon rivulare?

Accepted Answer

Memecylon rivulare is a native Sri Lankan shrub or small tree in the family Melastomataceae. It grows along stream banks and in moist lowland forests, and is catalogued as part of Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plant heritage. The species epithet 'rivulare' refers to its preference for riparian, or stream-side, habitats.

Question 2

What is Memecylon rivulare used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Within Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition, Memecylon species including M. rivulare have been associated with astringent and anti-inflammatory uses, including applications in wound healing, fever management, and skin conditions. Specific formulations vary between practitioners and regions. Use should always be guided by a qualified Ayurvedic physician.

Question 3

Where does Memecylon rivulare grow?

Accepted Answer

The species is found along stream banks and in the understory of moist lowland and lower montane forests, primarily in Sri Lanka's wet zone. Districts in the southwestern wet zone such as Ratnapura, Galle, and Kalutara support the type of humid riparian habitat this plant favours.

Question 4

Is Memecylon rivulare endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Memecylon rivulare is understood to be a Sri Lankan endemic or near-endemic, meaning its natural range is essentially confined to the island. Sri Lanka has an unusually high number of endemic Memecylon species relative to its land area, partly due to the island's status as a recognised global biodiversity hotspot.

Question 5

What family does Memecylon rivulare belong to?

Accepted Answer

Memecylon rivulare belongs to the family Melastomataceae, a large family of flowering plants widespread across tropical regions. Members of this family are often recognisable by their characteristic leaf venation and small, clustered flowers — typically blue or purple in the Memecylon genus.

Question 6

How many medicinal plants are catalogued in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia documents hundreds of native plant species used in traditional healing, drawn from the island's broader flora of approximately 3,000 flowering plant species, roughly a third of which are endemic. Memecylon rivulare is one of the species formally catalogued within this tradition by the Department of Ayurveda and related institutions.

Question 7

Is Memecylon rivulare at risk from habitat loss?

Accepted Answer

As a species with a narrow natural range dependent on intact riparian and lowland forest, Memecylon rivulare is potentially vulnerable to habitat degradation. Loss of stream-side forest cover in Sri Lanka's wet zone threatens the microhabitats that species like this depend on, making the conservation of lowland forest remnants particularly important.
