Question 1

What is Leucas biflora used for?

Accepted Answer

Leucas biflora is used in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic and folk medicine traditions, primarily for its perceived anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antipyretic properties. Traditional preparations have been applied to skin conditions, respiratory complaints, and fever. It is typically used as part of a compound herbal formulation rather than on its own.

Question 2

Where does Leucas biflora grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Leucas biflora is found growing in disturbed habitats, roadsides, scrublands, and field margins across Sri Lanka, particularly in the dry and intermediate climatic zones. It is drought-tolerant and favours open, sunny conditions in lowland areas.

Question 3

Is Leucas biflora the same as Leucas aspera?

Accepted Answer

Leucas biflora and Leucas aspera are distinct species within the same genus. Both occur in Sri Lanka and share broadly similar morphological features and traditional uses, but they are classified separately. Leucas aspera is generally the more widely studied of the two in scientific literature.

Question 4

What part of Leucas biflora is used medicinally?

Accepted Answer

The aerial parts of the plant — primarily the leaves, stems, and flowers — are used in traditional preparations. Depending on the intended application, these may be processed fresh or dried and incorporated into decoctions, poultices, or medicated oils.

Question 5

Is Leucas biflora an endangered plant in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Leucas biflora is not considered a threatened species; it grows fairly readily in disturbed and open habitats across Sri Lanka. However, broader pressures on the island's native flora from land-use change and habitat loss make systematic documentation of all medicinal plants an ongoing conservation priority.

Question 6

How is Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant tradition documented?

Accepted Answer

Government bodies including the Department of Ayurveda and the Bandaranaike Memorial Ayurvedic Research Institute maintain official catalogues of Sri Lanka's traditional medicinal plants, in which Leucas biflora is included. Academic researchers and ethnobotanists have also contributed to documentation through field surveys and phytochemical studies.

Question 7

Where can I learn about Sri Lankan medicinal plants as a visitor?

Accepted Answer

The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya near Kandy are among the best places to see Sri Lanka's medicinal flora in a curated setting. Ayurvedic wellness centres, particularly in the Southern Province, and rural village tours also offer opportunities to learn about traditional plant use directly from local practitioners.
