Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan ayurvedic practice, Indigofera arrecta is traditionally used in formulations targeting liver health, skin conditions, and neurological complaints such as epilepsy. Preparations include decoctions, powders, and medicated oils, always prescribed by a qualified ayurvedic physician rather than self-administered.

Question 2

Is Indigofera arrecta native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is found across tropical and subtropical Asia and Africa, so it is not strictly endemic to Sri Lanka. However, it is naturalised and widely distributed across the island's dry and intermediate zones, and it holds an official place in Sri Lanka's national ayurvedic pharmacopoeial catalogue.

Question 3

What is the difference between Indigofera arrecta and Indigofera tinctoria?

Accepted Answer

Both species belong to the same genus and contain the blue pigment indigotin, but they differ in their primary uses. Indigofera tinctoria is the principal commercial source of natural indigo dye, while Indigofera arrecta is more valued in Sri Lankan and South Asian traditional medicine for its purported medicinal properties.

Question 4

Where can I find Indigofera arrecta growing in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows naturally along roadsides, forest edges, and cultivated areas in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate climatic zones. It is also grown in ayurvedic herb gardens and government research stations dedicated to medicinal plant cultivation across the island.

Question 5

Is Indigofera arrecta safe to use as a home remedy?

Accepted Answer

Self-medication with any wild-harvested plant carries risks, including misidentification of species. Any use of Indigofera arrecta for medicinal purposes should be guided by a qualified ayurvedic practitioner who can determine the appropriate preparation, dosage, and suitability for an individual's constitution.

Question 6

What scientific research exists on Indigofera arrecta?

Accepted Answer

Ethnobotanical and laboratory studies have explored the plant's antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, consistent with its traditional uses. Clinical trials in humans are limited, and while early findings are of interest to pharmaceutical researchers, no approved drug products based on the plant are widely available yet.

Question 7

How is Indigofera arrecta classified in Sri Lanka's official records?

Accepted Answer

It is catalogued in Sri Lanka's national inventory of ayurvedic medicinal plants, administered by the Department of Ayurveda. On the Lakpura botanical reference system, it carries the identifier LK94006379 as part of a broader documentation project covering the island's medicinal plant heritage.
