Question 1

What is Hydrocotyle javanica used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's ayurvedic tradition, Hydrocotyle javanica has been used for skin conditions, mild digestive complaints, fever, and as a nerve tonic. It is typically applied topically as a paste or taken as a decoction. Always consult a qualified practitioner before using any medicinal plant therapeutically.

Question 2

Where does Hydrocotyle javanica grow naturally in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The herb favours damp, shaded locations such as stream banks, paddy-field margins, and the edges of wet forests. It is most common in Sri Lanka's wet zone and hill country, growing from the lowlands up to roughly 1,500 metres elevation.

Question 3

Is Hydrocotyle javanica the same as gotu kola?

Accepted Answer

No. Although both plants are creeping herbs with rounded leaves belonging to the family Apiaceae, Hydrocotyle javanica and Centella asiatica (gotu kola) are distinct species. They share a superficial resemblance and some overlap in traditional uses, but differ in their botanical characteristics and therapeutic profiles.

Question 4

Is Hydrocotyle javanica safe to consume?

Accepted Answer

The plant has a long history of traditional use in Sri Lanka and across tropical Asia, suggesting a reasonable safety profile at typical herbal doses. However, rigorous clinical safety data are limited. Pregnant women, individuals on medication, and those with chronic conditions should seek medical advice before use.

Question 5

What plant family does Hydrocotyle javanica belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the family Apiaceae, sometimes called Umbelliferae, the same family that includes coriander, parsley, and fennel. Within this family, the genus Hydrocotyle encompasses numerous creeping wetland and forest-margin herbs found throughout the tropics.

Question 6

Is Hydrocotyle javanica found in Sri Lanka's national parks?

Accepted Answer

The plant can occur within protected areas that encompass wet forest habitats, particularly in the wet zone. It is more associated with forest margins and watercourse edges than with open dry-zone habitats like those of Wilpattu or Udawalawe.

Question 7

Can I see medicinal plants like Hydrocotyle javanica on a Sri Lanka tour?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Several herb and spice gardens in the Kandy and Matale districts give visitors a guided introduction to Sri Lanka's medicinal plant heritage, including species catalogued in the ayurvedic tradition. Hill-country forest walks and botanical gardens are also good places to encounter these plants in their natural setting.
