Question 1

What is Dioscorea koyamae used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Dioscorea koyamae is listed in Sri Lanka's official ayurvedic medicinal plant catalog. Like related wild yam species, its tubers have been used in traditional preparations associated with joint health, digestion, and general vitality. Specific applications are determined by qualified ayurvedic practitioners based on classical formulation principles.

Question 2

Is Dioscorea koyamae found in the wild in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Dioscorea koyamae grows in forest and forest-margin habitats in Sri Lanka. The Dioscorea genus is well represented in the island's wet and intermediate zones, where several indigenous species are found climbing through forest vegetation. Sustainable collection of wild tubers is important to protect rarer species from over-harvesting.

Question 3

What plant family does Dioscorea koyamae belong to?

Accepted Answer

Dioscorea koyamae belongs to the family Dioscoreaceae, within the order Dioscoreales. This family encompasses the wild yams — herbaceous climbing plants that produce starchy underground tubers. The genus Dioscorea is one of the largest in the family and includes both medicinal and food species.

Question 4

How is Dioscorea koyamae different from edible yams?

Accepted Answer

While some Dioscorea species such as D. alata are widely eaten across Sri Lanka and the tropics, D. koyamae is primarily documented for its medicinal rather than nutritional properties. Some wild yam species also contain bitter or potentially toxic compounds requiring processing, making expert knowledge essential for safe use.

Question 5

What other ayurvedic plants are documented in Sri Lanka's medicinal catalog?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains a comprehensive catalog covering hundreds of species, ranging from large timber trees like Acacia chundra to climbing herbs and aquatic plants. Well-known catalogued plants include Pongamia pinnata and various species used in compound preparations such as Yogaraja Guggulu. The island's biodiversity makes it one of the richest sources of medicinal flora in South Asia.

Question 6

Are there any scientific studies on Dioscorea koyamae?

Accepted Answer

Dioscorea koyamae remains one of the lesser-studied species within the broader Dioscorea genus. While related species have attracted research interest for their steroidal saponin content and anti-inflammatory properties, peer-reviewed studies specifically on D. koyamae are limited. This reflects a wider gap in ethnobotanical research on Sri Lanka's endemic and indigenous flora.

Question 7

Can I buy Dioscorea koyamae preparations in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Preparations based specifically on Dioscorea koyamae are not commonly available as branded retail products. However, compound ayurvedic formulations that may include wild yam species are produced by licensed manufacturers operating under the Sri Lanka Department of Ayurveda. These are typically dispensed through ayurvedic hospitals or specialist practitioners rather than general pharmacies.
