Question 1

What is Citrus sinensis used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic medicine, Citrus sinensis (sweet orange) is valued primarily as a digestive aid, carminative, and mild expectorant. The fruit juice, dried peel, leaves, and essential oil each serve different therapeutic purposes in traditional Sri Lankan formulations. The peel in particular is used in decoctions and powders to stimulate digestion and relieve bloating.

Question 2

Is the sweet orange native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sweet orange is not native to Sri Lanka but has been cultivated on the island for centuries, believed to have arrived via trade routes from Southeast Asia. It now grows widely in the low-country wet zone and parts of the hill country, naturalised into both smallholder agriculture and home gardens.

Question 3

Which part of the sweet orange plant is most used medicinally?

Accepted Answer

The dried peel is generally considered the most medicinally active part, owing to its concentration of essential oils — particularly limonene — and flavonoids. Fresh juice is widely used as a vitamin C source and digestive tonic, while leaves and flowers feature in more specialised Ayurvedic and home-remedy preparations.

Question 4

Are there any Citrus sinensis products made in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Several Sri Lankan wellness and personal-care brands incorporate sweet orange essential oil into products such as Ayurvedic shampoos, bath salts, body washes, and facial exfoliators. Citrus-infused teas blending orange peel with Ceylon tea are also produced locally and exported widely.

Question 5

Is Citrus sinensis the same as the common orange you eat?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Citrus sinensis is the scientific name for the sweet orange — the standard table orange sold in markets worldwide. The distinction from related species such as bitter orange (Citrus aurantium) matters in a medicinal context, as the two have different chemical profiles and traditional applications.

Question 6

Does modern science support the Ayurvedic uses of sweet orange?

Accepted Answer

Modern phytochemical research confirms that sweet orange contains vitamin C, hesperidin, naringenin, and limonene, compounds with demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Clinical evidence for specific therapeutic claims varies, but the plant's safety profile and nutritional value are broadly accepted in both conventional and integrative medicine.

Question 7

Where can I learn about Ayurvedic plants while travelling in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Ayurvedic hospitals, wellness retreats, and spice garden tours across Sri Lanka introduce visitors to the country's medicinal plant heritage. The Institute of Indigenous Medicine at the University of Colombo and various government Ayurvedic hospitals also offer educational resources for those interested in deeper study.
