Question 1

Which cities are closest to Sri Lanka's main airport?

Accepted Answer

Bandaranaike International Airport is near Negombo, around 30 kilometres north of Colombo. Most travellers either start in Negombo for convenience or transfer directly to Colombo on arrival. The drive to Kandy takes around two to three hours depending on traffic.

Question 2

How many days should I spend in Colombo?

Accepted Answer

One to two full days is enough to cover Colombo's main highlights, including the Fort district, Pettah market, Gangaramaya Temple, and Galle Face Green. The city works well as a first or last stop rather than a central base for exploring the rest of the island.

Question 3

Is it better to travel between Sri Lanka cities by train or private car?

Accepted Answer

Trains are scenic and inexpensive, and the Kandy-to-Ella route is one of the most picturesque rail journeys in Asia. However, schedules are fixed and seats on popular routes sell out. Private cars offer flexibility, door-to-door service, and the ability to stop en route, making them the better choice for families or travellers with luggage.

Question 4

What is the best city to base myself for visiting national parks?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the park. Yala and Udawalawe are best accessed from Tissamaharama or the south coast. Wilpattu is closest to Puttalam or Anuradhapura. Minneriya and Kaudulla are day trips from Sigiriya or Polonnaruwa. Horton Plains is reached from Nuwara Eliya or Ella.

Question 5

Can I visit Galle as a day trip from Colombo?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Galle is around 120 kilometres from Colombo and the expressway makes the drive around 90 minutes each way. A comfortable day trip allows two to three hours inside the fort and time for a stop at a south-coast attraction en route. An overnight stay lets you explore more leisurely and catch the atmosphere after day visitors leave.

Question 6

What is there to do in Nuwara Eliya?

Accepted Answer

Nuwara Eliya is Sri Lanka's hill-station city, known for its tea estates, colonial-era hotels, Victoria Park, and the Gregory Lake waterfront. It is a base for visiting Horton Plains National Park and World's End, and for tea factory tours in the surrounding highlands. The town has a distinctive cooler climate that is noticeable compared to the coast.

Question 7

Which Sri Lanka cities are best for families with children?

Accepted Answer

Kandy offers the Temple of the Tooth, the botanical gardens, and accessible cultural shows. Galle Fort is walkable and safe for children. Negombo is relaxed and convenient. Ella has gentle hikes suited to older children. Most families combine a city base with a wildlife destination such as Udawalawe, which has excellent elephant sightings.

Question 8

Do I need to pre-book transfers between Sri Lanka cities?

Accepted Answer

Pre-booking is strongly recommended during peak season (December to March) and for early-morning or late-night departures. For popular routes such as airport-to-Colombo or Colombo-to-Kandy, same-day bookings are usually possible outside peak periods, but confirmed arrangements avoid uncertainty on travel days.
