Question 1

What is Cassine balae used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Cassine balae is catalogued in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic materia medica as a medicinal plant with recognised therapeutic applications. Traditional practitioners typically use plants from the Cassine genus in compound formulations targeting conditions such as inflammation, digestive issues, and skin ailments. Specific use is guided by trained Ayurvedic physicians who determine appropriate preparations and dosages.

Question 2

Which plant family does Cassine balae belong to?

Accepted Answer

Cassine balae belongs to the family Celastraceae, a family of flowering plants distributed across tropical and subtropical regions. Members of this family are typically woody shrubs or small trees with simple leathery leaves and fleshy fruits. The genus Cassine includes several species found across Africa, Asia, and the Indian Ocean islands.

Question 3

Is Cassine balae endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Cassine balae is documented as part of Sri Lanka's native Ayurvedic plant catalogue, indicating it is found on the island. Whether it is strictly endemic — meaning found nowhere else — requires confirmation from current botanical survey data. Sri Lanka does host a very high proportion of endemic plant species relative to its land area, particularly in its wet zone forests.

Question 4

Where can I find information on Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plants?

Accepted Answer

The Department of Ayurveda in Sri Lanka maintains official records of recognised medicinal plants used in traditional practice. The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya also hosts extensive plant collections with documentation on medicinal uses. Academic institutions in Colombo and Kandy publish research on Sri Lankan ethnobotany and traditional pharmacopoeia.

Question 5

Are Sri Lanka's wild medicinal plants under threat?

Accepted Answer

Yes, several species in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic plant catalogue are considered vulnerable due to habitat loss and unsustainable harvesting. Deforestation and agricultural expansion have reduced the natural forest cover where many of these plants grow. Conservation efforts by the government and NGOs focus on both habitat protection and the promotion of cultivation to reduce pressure on wild populations.

Question 6

Can tourists visit Ayurvedic herb gardens in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a number of botanical gardens, Ayurvedic resorts, and spice gardens across Sri Lanka welcome visitors and offer guided tours explaining the medicinal uses of native plants. The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya near Kandy is one of the most accessible and comprehensive options. Spice garden tours in Matale and the hill country regions are also popular and include demonstrations of traditional preparations.

Question 7

How is Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition different from Indian Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lankan traditional medicine, known locally as Deshiya Chikitsa, shares its theoretical foundations with Indian Ayurveda but has developed distinct characteristics over centuries of independent practice. Sri Lankan healers incorporated a large number of endemic plant species not found in classical Indian texts, creating a uniquely local pharmacopoeia. Regional healing traditions, family lineages of practitioners, and the island's specific biodiversity all contribute to this distinctiveness.
