Question 8

Is Caesalpinia sappan the same as Brazil wood?

Accepted Answer

Caesalpinia sappan is closely related to Paubrasilia echinata (the Brazilian tree that gave Brazil its name), and both yield similar red dyes. However, they are distinct species. Sappanwood is native to tropical Asia, while Paubrasilia echinata is native to South America. The similarity in dye chemistry led early European traders to use the name 'brazil' for both.
