Question 1

Where is Bolgoda Lake located in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Bolgoda Lake lies approximately 30 kilometres south of Colombo, on the border of Panadura (Kalutara District) and Moratuwa (Colombo District). It is reached via the Southern Expressway or the coastal Galle Road, and is typically a 45-minute to 75-minute drive from central Colombo depending on traffic.

Question 2

What is the best hotel or villa to stay at on Bolgoda Lake?

Accepted Answer

The right property depends on your group size and preferences. Citrus Aqua Bolgoda suits resort-style stays with organised water activities; Villa Bolgoda and Governors Villa Bolgoda offer private villa experiences; Mastiff Grand Bolgoda and Hotel Bolgoda Park cater to mid-range comfort. All are accessible with a private Lakpura transfer from the airport.

Question 3

How far is Bolgoda Lake from Colombo airport?

Accepted Answer

From Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake, the drive to most Bolgoda properties takes around 55 to 70 minutes via the E01 Southern Expressway. The exact time varies depending on which property you are heading to and road conditions at the time of travel.

Question 4

What water sports can I do at Bolgoda Lake?

Accepted Answer

Bolgoda Lake offers kayaking, jet skiing, jet boating, freshwater fishing, bowfishing, and general water sports packages. Night bowfishing sessions are a particularly popular option for guests staying at lakeside properties. Most activities can be booked through Lakpura and are suitable for different experience levels.

Question 5

Is Bolgoda Lake freshwater or saltwater?

Accepted Answer

Bolgoda is primarily a freshwater lake, though it connects to the sea via a tidal channel near Panadura, which causes some salinity fluctuation. The lake supports a healthy freshwater fish population, including species such as snakehead and tilapia, and is managed as an environmentally sensitive wetland.

Question 6

What is the best time of year to visit Bolgoda Lake?

Accepted Answer

The dry season from November to April provides the calmest water conditions and the best weather for outdoor activities. During the southwestern monsoon season (roughly May to August), the open lake can become choppy, though sheltered sections are still used for guided activities.

Question 7

Can I visit Bolgoda Lake as a day trip from Colombo?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the lake is close enough to Colombo for a comfortable day excursion. Many visitors combine a kayaking or jet ski session with lunch at a lakeside restaurant before returning to the city. However, staying at least one night is recommended to take advantage of evening activities like night fishing and to experience the lake at a slower pace.

Question 8

Are there private airport transfers to Bolgoda Lake properties?

Accepted Answer

Lakpura operates private transfers from Colombo Airport directly to individual Bolgoda properties including Citrus Aqua, Villa Bolgoda, Mastiff Grand, Villa 14, Hotel Bolgoda Park, and Governors Villa. Fares vary by property location and are bookable in advance through Lakpura's transfer service.
