Horathapola Coconut Estate is a 100-year-old family home at Horathapola, near Pannala in the Kurunegala District, standing in 50 acres of working coconut estate. It is about an hour (42 km) from Bandaranaike International Airport, which makes it a natural first or last stop in Sri Lanka – and a gentle introduction to village life before heading on to the Cultural Triangle.
Five rooms and suites sleep up to 16 guests: the Family Lodge and the Family Suite (with a balcony), and three large rooms – Maha Kamare overlooking the garden, Watte Kamare in the garden and Pokuna Kamare facing the pool. The estate can be booked for exclusive use by a family or group.
Guests staying two nights or more are taken on a complimentary guided walk through the estate to learn the many uses of the coconut palm, and, time permitting, on a village tour on foot or by bicycle – past coir (coconut-fibre) workshops, a temple and families peeling cashew nuts. In the kitchen, the chef shows how curries are cooked the traditional way, in clay pots over a wood fire, with most ingredients grown on the estate.
A large swimming pool and a jacuzzi tucked into the greenery are the places to cool off. Meals are à la carte for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with afternoon tea in between.
The rock fortress of Yapahuwa and Wilpattu National Park are within day-trip range, and Negombo and the airport are an easy drive. Check-in is at 1 pm and check-out at 11 am; driver accommodation is available.
