Kalkudah Beach House

Kalkudah, Sri Lanka

Kalkudah Beach House is a laid-back Teardrop Hotels retreat on a quiet, secluded stretch of Sri Lanka’s east coast at Kalkudah. It is made up of two private villas in a breezy coconut grove, just steps from the ocean: the three-bedroom Main House and the two-bedroom Palm Villa. They sit on either side of a 22-metre swimming pool. The whole property is wheelchair accessible, and solar panels generate up to 90% of its electricity.

How do I get to Kalkudah Beach House?

The east coast is a long drive from Bandaranaike International Airport: about 270–300 km, or around six hours. Many guests arrive instead from the Cultural Triangle. Polonnaruwa is 72 km away (about 1.5 hours), Sigiriya 127 km (3 hours) and Trincomalee 110 km (2.5 hours). Pasikuda is 9.5 km (15 minutes) away. The nearest domestic airport is Batticaloa, 30 km (45 minutes) away. Lakpura can arrange a private car and driver for the transfer.

Rooms and suites

There are five rooms:

  • The Kalkudah Suite (72 sqm) is upstairs in the Main House, with a king bed, a living area and a balcony facing the ocean.
  • Three Beachview Suites (38 sqm) are on the ground floor. They have king beds that convert to twins and private verandas looking onto the beach.
  • The Beachview Bedroom (33 sqm) is a cosy ground-floor queen room in the Main House, with a veranda onto the garden.

Rooms can be booked individually, as an exclusive two- or three-bedroom villa, or as a full buyout of all five. Each has air conditioning, a fan, a safe and Wi-Fi. Baby cots and rollaway beds are available on request.

Dining

Meals celebrate the flavours and spices of the east coast. Expect fresh, locally caught seafood, hearty salads and Sri Lankan curries alongside international dishes, served outdoors by the beach. The à la carte restaurant is open from 7 am to 10:30 pm and has a children’s menu. There is a bar on site, and a social hour with sunset cocktails each evening.

Things to do

Days start with a sunrise swim in the sea and move on to garden games on the pétanque court and pool table. The hotel arranges reef snorkelling, kayaking and wreck diving, a sunset cruise over Kalkudah Bay, and bottom or deep-sea fishing. It also offers a cookery session with the chef, a trip to the historic Dutch Fort at Batticaloa, and a day among the ruins of the UNESCO-listed ancient city of Polonnaruwa. The long, shallow beach at Kalkudah is right on the doorstep.
