Question 1

What is Solanum americanum used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practice, Solanum americanum is used in formulations targeting liver support, digestive conditions, skin disorders, and fever management. Its bitter quality is valued for its perceived detoxifying properties. It is always used as part of supervised traditional preparations rather than consumed raw.

Question 2

Is Solanum americanum the same as black nightshade?

Accepted Answer

Solanum americanum is closely related to, and often confused with, common black nightshade (Solanum nigrum). Both belong to the same genus and share similar appearances and chemical profiles. Taxonomic distinctions between the two are sometimes debated, but in Sri Lanka both names may be used interchangeably in traditional contexts.

Question 3

Are the berries of Solanum americanum edible?

Accepted Answer

The ripe black berries of Solanum americanum are mildly toxic when consumed raw due to the presence of solanine and related glycoalkaloids. They are not recommended for direct consumption without proper preparation. In traditional medicine, specific processing methods are used to manage this toxicity before the plant is incorporated into formulations.

Question 4

Where does Solanum americanum grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows widely across Sri Lanka's lowland and mid-elevation areas, thriving in disturbed habitats such as roadsides, garden edges, fallow fields, and forest margins. It is not cultivated commercially and is typically gathered from wild populations by traditional practitioners.

Question 5

What is the Sinhala name for Solanum americanum?

Accepted Answer

Solanum americanum is commonly known as 'Tit-takola' or 'Ganike' in Sinhala, though local names can vary by region. In Ayurvedic texts, it may also be referenced under Sanskrit equivalents used across South Asian traditional medicine systems.

Question 6

Is Solanum americanum included in Sri Lanka's official Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia?

Accepted Answer

Accepted Answer
