Question 1

What is Macaranga peltata used for in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Macaranga peltata is used in Sri Lanka's traditional ayurvedic medicine for its astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. The bark, leaves, and latex are incorporated into preparations that address skin ailments, inflammatory conditions, and general wellness. It is typically harvested as a wildcrafted plant from natural forest habitats.

Question 2

Where does Macaranga peltata grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The tree is native to Sri Lanka's wet zone and grows at low to mid elevations, favouring disturbed forest edges, roadsides, and secondary forest margins. It is commonly seen in the foothills of the Central Highlands and along riverine corridors where rainfall is high year-round.

Question 3

How do I identify Macaranga peltata?

Accepted Answer

Macaranga peltata is identifiable by its large, shield-shaped (peltate) leaves, which can measure 20–40 cm across. The tree grows quickly to between 5 and 15 metres and is frequently found on forest margins and disturbed land in Sri Lanka's wet zone. Its hollow or pithy stems are another distinguishing feature.

Question 4

What does wildcrafted mean for Macaranga peltata products?

Accepted Answer

Wildcrafted means the plant material has been harvested directly from its natural forest habitat rather than from cultivated crops. For Macaranga peltata, this is the traditional method of collection, and it is considered to preserve more of the plant's natural properties. Responsible wildcrafting avoids over-harvesting to protect the wild population.

Question 5

Is Macaranga peltata found in Sri Lanka's protected forests?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Macaranga and related species are commonly observed on the margins of Sri Lanka's protected areas and nature reserves, particularly in the wet zone. They tend to grow at forest edges rather than deep inside primary forest, making them accessible to visitors on guided nature walks.

Question 6

Are there any commercially available Macaranga peltata products?

Accepted Answer

Dried and crushed Macaranga peltata leaves are available as packaged herbal products, often described as wildcrafted. These are produced by small-scale herbalists and wellness brands sourcing from Sri Lanka's forests. They are used as an ingredient in herbal teas, decoctions, or as part of broader ayurvedic formulations.
