Question 1

What is Jasminum angustifolium used for in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan and South Asian ayurvedic tradition, the leaves, bark, and roots of Jasminum angustifolium have been used in formulations for skin conditions, fever, and inflammatory complaints. The flowers are occasionally used in topical preparations. These applications come from classical texts and ethnobotanical records rather than modern clinical trials, so a qualified ayurvedic practitioner should always be consulted before use.

Question 2

Where does Jasminum angustifolium grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species grows naturally in the dry and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka, favouring forest margins, secondary scrub, and hedgerows. It is particularly associated with the North Central, Northern, and Eastern provinces, where it tolerates the seasonally dry conditions well.

Question 3

Is Jasminum angustifolium the same as common jasmine?

Accepted Answer

No. Common jasmine used in Sri Lankan garlands and religious offerings is Jasminum sambac, a different species within the same genus. Jasminum angustifolium is a wild climbing shrub recognised primarily for its ethnomedicinal value rather than for ornamental or ceremonial use.

Question 4

What does Jasminum angustifolium look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a woody, scrambling climber with narrow lance-shaped leaves — the narrow leaf shape is reflected in the Latin name angustifolium. It bears small white tubular flowers typical of the jasmine genus, with a light fragrance. The plant can reach considerable length when it has suitable support to climb.

Question 5

Is Jasminum angustifolium endangered in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is not currently classified as threatened in Sri Lanka. Its adaptability to disturbed habitats gives it broader distribution than many forest-specialist plants. Ongoing pressure on dry-zone ecosystems means populations are monitored as part of broader biodiversity efforts, but the plant is not considered at immediate risk.

Question 6

What is the Sinhala name for Jasminum angustifolium?

Accepted Answer

The plant is referred to in Sinhala traditional medicine literature and ayurvedic pharmacopoeias, where it is sometimes called Wal Pichcha or a related vernacular name. Nomenclature can vary by region, so the scientific name is the most reliable way to identify the correct species when consulting botanical records.

Question 7

Can I see medicinal plants like Jasminum angustifolium on a Sri Lanka tour?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Ayurvedic gardens, herbal farms, and wellness centres across Sri Lanka — particularly near Kandy and in the Cultural Triangle — cultivate documented medicinal plant species. Guided nature walks in dry-zone reserves also offer opportunities to observe wild specimens. Arranging these visits through a specialist tour operator ensures you are accompanied by a guide who can identify plants accurately.
