Accepted Answer

It is a grass species in the family Poaceae, documented as a medicinal plant in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant catalogue under the identifier LK94005976. The variety name zeylanicum indicates its close botanical association with Sri Lanka. It grows in open grasslands, field margins, and disturbed soils across the island's lowland zones.

Question 2

Is Ischaemum timorense var. zeylanicum used in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

The species is listed in Sri Lanka's official catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants, indicating documented recognition within the traditional system. Grasses in general have been used in South Asian Ayurveda for various purposes, including cooling and diuretic applications. Specific therapeutic use should be confirmed with a qualified ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 3

Where can I find Ischaemum timorense var. zeylanicum in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant typically grows in lowland and intermediate zone habitats, including roadsides, the edges of paddy fields, and fallow agricultural land. It is not commonly cultivated and is usually encountered as part of naturally occurring grassland vegetation across rural Sri Lanka.

Question 4

What does the variety name zeylanicum mean?

Accepted Answer

Zeylanicum is a Latinised botanical epithet derived from Zeilan or Zeylon, the early European and Arabic rendering of Ceylon, the historical name for Sri Lanka. When applied to a plant variety, it signals that the variant was first described from, or is strongly associated with, Sri Lanka.

Question 5

How many medicinal plants are catalogued in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic system?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda and associated research institutions have catalogued hundreds of plant species used in the traditional system, including flowering plants, trees, grasses, and sedges. The total number of documented species runs into the hundreds, reflecting the island's extraordinary botanical diversity. Many are endemic or near-endemic to Sri Lanka.

Question 6

What is the best way to learn about Sri Lanka's medicinal plants as a visitor?

Accepted Answer

The National Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, near Kandy, maintain extensive and well-labelled plant collections that include many species from the ayurvedic pharmacopoeia. Ayurvedic wellness resorts, particularly in the hill country and coastal areas, often offer guided herb garden tours. Some rural village experiences also incorporate introductions to home garden medicinal plants.

Question 7

Why are grass species included in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant catalogue?

Accepted Answer

Ayurvedic medicine in South Asia has a long tradition of incorporating grasses alongside more conspicuous herbs, trees, and shrubs. Grasses have been attributed with cooling, diuretic, and digestive properties in classical texts. Their inclusion in the official catalogue reflects systematic documentation of all species with recognised or potential therapeutic value, not only those with obvious or dramatic medicinal reputations.
