Question 1

What is Ischaemum rugosum?

Accepted Answer

Ischaemum rugosum is a tropical annual grass in the family Poaceae, widely distributed across South and Southeast Asia. In Sri Lanka, it is catalogued as an ayurvedic medicinal plant under the reference code LK94005977. Despite being considered a weed in paddy cultivation, it has recognised significance in traditional herbal medicine.

Question 2

What are the traditional uses of Ischaemum rugosum in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Within ayurvedic and folk medicine traditions across South Asia, related Ischaemum species have been associated with cooling, diuretic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant catalogue documents the species as part of its broader inventory of medicinal grasses. Any therapeutic use should be discussed with a qualified ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 3

Where is Ischaemum rugosum found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is common in Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zones, typically growing along paddy field margins, roadsides, and damp disturbed ground from sea level up to moderate elevations. It favours moist, loamy soils and is most visible during and after the rainy seasons.

Question 4

Is Ischaemum rugosum dangerous to crops?

Accepted Answer

Yes, in an agricultural context it is classified as a weed that competes with rice and other crops for water, nutrients, and light. Its ability to produce abundant seed and thrive in wet conditions makes it a persistent challenge in tropical paddy farming across Asia, including Sri Lanka.

Question 5

How does Sri Lanka catalogue its ayurvedic medicinal plants?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Ministry of Indigenous Medicine maintains an official catalogue that assigns unique reference codes to documented medicinal species. This system draws on classical Sanskrit and Sinhala texts as well as local practitioner knowledge, creating a standardised database that links traditional plant names to botanical identifiers.

Question 6

What family does Ischaemum rugosum belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the grass family Poaceae, one of the most economically and ecologically significant plant families on Earth. Within this family, the genus Ischaemum comprises several dozen species distributed across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

Question 7

Can I see ayurvedic plants like Ischaemum rugosum during a visit to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya near Kandy maintains a labelled medicinal plant collection, and many ayurvedic wellness centres across the island cultivate or display traditional plant species. Village herb garden tours in rural areas also provide close-up access to plants featured in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic catalogue.
