Question 1

What is Diospyros malabarica used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurveda, Diospyros malabarica is primarily valued for its astringent properties. The unripe fruit, bark, and leaves are traditionally used to treat wounds, skin conditions, diarrhoea, and fevers. It is classified as a kashaya (astringent) herb, considered helpful in conditions associated with excess pitta.

Question 2

Is the fruit of Diospyros malabarica edible?

Accepted Answer

The ripe fruit is edible and mildly sweet, and has been consumed in rural communities across Sri Lanka and South Asia. However, the unripe fruit is strongly astringent due to its high tannin content and is not eaten raw. The species is not commercially cultivated as a food crop.

Question 3

Where does Diospyros malabarica grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The tree grows across Sri Lanka's lowland dry and intermediate zones, often in mixed deciduous forests and along riverbanks. It is found naturally in areas including the North Central Province and in dry-zone national parks. It typically grows below 900 metres in elevation.

Question 4

What is the Sinhala name for Diospyros malabarica?

Accepted Answer

Diospyros malabarica is commonly known in Sinhala as 'Timbiri' (තිඹිරි). The name refers both to the tree and its characteristic astringent unripe fruit, which has been familiar to Sri Lankan rural communities for generations.

Question 5

Is Diospyros malabarica related to ebony?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Diospyros malabarica belongs to the family Ebenaceae, the same family that produces commercial ebony. It is sometimes called Malabar ebony or gaub tree. While its wood is hard, it is not exploited commercially for timber in Sri Lanka in the way that true ebony (Diospyros ebenum) once was.

Question 6

Does scientific research support the traditional uses of Diospyros malabarica?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical studies have identified tannins, flavonoids, and naphthoquinones in the plant, with laboratory research indicating preliminary antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. However, rigorous clinical trials in humans are limited, so its therapeutic use should be undertaken with guidance from a qualified ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 7

Can I see Diospyros malabarica growing in Sri Lanka's national parks?

Accepted Answer

The tree is part of the natural vegetation in several of Sri Lanka's dry-zone protected areas, including Wilpattu National Park. It is not typically highlighted on wildlife tours, but naturalist guides and botanically focused visits may point it out in mixed forest settings.
