Question 1

What is Diospyros atrata used for in Sri Lankan Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Diospyros atrata is catalogued as a medicinal plant in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic tradition. Plants in the Diospyros genus are generally associated with astringent and anti-inflammatory properties and have historically been used in treatments for digestive complaints, skin conditions, and fever. Specific applications vary by practitioner and regional tradition.

Question 2

Which plant family does Diospyros atrata belong to?

Accepted Answer

Diospyros atrata belongs to the family Ebenaceae, the same family that includes true ebony trees and persimmons. The genus Diospyros is distributed across tropical regions of Asia, Africa, and the Americas, and is represented by multiple species in Sri Lanka's native flora.

Question 3

Where can Diospyros atrata be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Like other members of the Diospyros genus, Diospyros atrata is associated with tropical forest habitats. Sri Lanka's wet-zone rainforests and dry-zone riverine forests provide suitable environments for native Diospyros species. Areas such as the Sinharaja Forest Reserve represent the kind of biodiverse habitat where such plants occur.

Question 4

What does the name Diospyros atrata mean?

Accepted Answer

The genus name Diospyros derives from Greek, roughly translating to 'fruit of the gods' or 'divine grain', reflecting the edible fruit produced by many species in this group. The species epithet atrata means 'darkened' or 'clothed in black' in Latin, likely referring to the plant's bark or fruit colouration.

Question 5

Is Diospyros atrata the same as ebony?

Accepted Answer

Diospyros atrata belongs to the same genus as ebony species such as Diospyros ebenum, which is famously associated with Sri Lankan black ebony. However, Diospyros atrata is a distinct species valued primarily for its medicinal rather than timber properties. The genus is large and diverse, and not all members produce ebony-grade wood.

Question 6

How does Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant catalogue work?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains an official catalogue of plants recognised for use in traditional medicine. Plants are listed alongside their Sinhala, Tamil, and scientific names, and their documented medicinal applications. This catalogue supports both practising ayurvedic physicians and researchers studying the pharmacological potential of traditional plant medicines.

Question 7

Are there conservation concerns around Sri Lanka's medicinal plants?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Habitat loss due to deforestation and agricultural land conversion poses a significant threat to many native medicinal plant populations in Sri Lanka. Species that grow primarily in natural forest ecosystems are particularly vulnerable. Documentation and cultivation of medicinal plants are increasingly prioritised by conservation bodies and the ayurvedic sector alike.
