Question 1

What is Croton tiglium used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Croton tiglium is primarily used in Ayurveda as a drastic purgative, particularly in virechana (therapeutic purification) procedures. It is applied in cases of severe constipation and certain skin conditions. Due to its potency, it is always processed and administered under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic physician.

Question 2

Is Croton tiglium the same as the ornamental croton plant?

Accepted Answer

No. The ornamental croton common in gardens and houseplants belongs to the species Codiaeum variegatum and is an entirely different plant from Croton tiglium. Croton tiglium is a medicinal species with significant toxicity; the ornamental croton is grown purely for its colorful foliage and is not related to Ayurvedic medicinal use.

Question 3

Is croton oil from Croton tiglium dangerous?

Accepted Answer

Yes, unprocessed croton oil is highly toxic and a potent skin and gastrointestinal irritant. Even small amounts can cause severe reactions if ingested. Traditional Ayurvedic processing methods reduce but do not eliminate its toxicity, which is why its use is strictly the domain of trained, registered practitioners.

Question 4

Where does Croton tiglium grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Croton tiglium is found in home gardens, Ayurvedic medicinal plant collections, and secondary vegetation across Sri Lanka's low country wet and dry zones. It thrives in tropical lowland conditions with well-drained soils and ample sunlight.

Question 5

What are the active ingredients in Croton tiglium seeds?

Accepted Answer

The seeds contain croton oil, which is rich in phorbol esters — diterpene compounds responsible for the plant's intense purgative and irritant effects. Phorbol esters have also attracted scientific interest for their role as protein kinase C modulators in pharmacological research.

Question 6

Does Sri Lanka's government recognize Croton tiglium as a medicinal plant?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda includes Croton tiglium in its official Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia. The government formally recognizes Ayurveda as a parallel healthcare system, and licensed practitioners are authorized to prepare and prescribe croton-based formulations.

Question 7

Can I buy Croton tiglium products as a tourist in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Processed Ayurvedic formulations containing Croton tiglium may be available through registered Ayurvedic pharmacies, but they should only be purchased with a practitioner's recommendation. Raw seeds or unprocessed oil are not appropriate for purchase or self-use by general visitors.
