Question 1

What is Cassia spectabilis used for in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's ayurvedic tradition, Cassia spectabilis leaves, bark, and seeds have been used in traditional preparations associated with mild laxative effects, fever management, and skin conditions. Its use is part of the island's broader catalogue of indigenous and naturalised medicinal plants. Standardised preparations from related Cassia and Senna species are more commonly available in commercial herbal products.

Question 2

Is Cassia spectabilis the same as the golden shower tree?

Accepted Answer

The name 'golden shower tree' is more commonly applied to Cassia fistula, which is a distinct species from Cassia spectabilis. Both produce yellow flowers and belong to the same family, but they differ in flower arrangement, pod structure, and medicinal applications. Cassia spectabilis produces flowers in upright panicles, while Cassia fistula has pendant racemes.

Question 3

Is Cassia spectabilis native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, Cassia spectabilis is native to tropical America and was introduced to South and Southeast Asia, where it has become widely naturalised. In Sri Lanka it is found along roadsides, in home gardens, and at forest margins, particularly in the dry and intermediate zones. Despite not being indigenous, it has been incorporated into ayurvedic practice.

Question 4

Can I safely use Cassia spectabilis as a home remedy?

Accepted Answer

Traditional use of Cassia spectabilis should be approached cautiously. The plant contains anthraquinone compounds that can have strong effects at higher doses. Ayurvedic practitioners typically prescribe it in controlled formulations. Self-preparation from wild-harvested material is not recommended without professional guidance, especially for vulnerable individuals.

Question 5

What other Cassia species are used medicinally in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's medicinal plant tradition includes several Cassia and Senna species. Senna alata (known locally as eththora) is used for skin conditions, Senna tora is prepared as a herbal coffee and tea, and Cassia fistula (ehela) is one of the most culturally significant flowering trees on the island. Each species has a distinct pharmacological profile and traditional application.

Question 6

Where can I see Cassia spectabilis trees in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Cassia spectabilis grows in many parts of Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones. It is commonly planted along roadsides, near village settlements, and at the boundaries of agricultural land. The tree is most noticeable when in flower, when its bright yellow panicles make it easy to spot from a distance.

Question 7

What does Cassia spectabilis look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a medium to large tree with pinnately compound leaves and upright, dense clusters of bright yellow flowers. The seed pods are long, cylindrical, and turn dark brown or black when mature. The tree has a spreading canopy and can grow to around ten metres or more under favourable conditions.
