Accepted Answer

Aerva javanica is used in Ayurvedic and folk medicine traditions for a range of purposes, including reducing inflammation, supporting urinary and kidney health, managing fever, and treating minor wounds. Different parts of the plant — roots, leaves, flowers, and seeds — are used depending on the intended preparation and application.

Question 2

Where does Aerva javanica grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant favours dry and arid conditions and is most commonly found in the dry zone of Sri Lanka, particularly in the Northern and North-Western provinces. It typically grows in sandy soils, disturbed ground, and sparse scrubland, often alongside other dry-zone plant species.

Question 3

Is Aerva javanica the same as Polpala?

Accepted Answer

No, Aerva javanica and Polpala (Aerva lanata) are distinct species within the same genus. Polpala is more widely known in Sri Lanka for its urinary health benefits and is commonly sold as an herbal tea. Aerva javanica has overlapping traditional uses but prefers drier habitats and has a different phytochemical profile.

Question 4

What does Aerva javanica look like?

Accepted Answer

Aerva javanica is a perennial herb or small shrub growing up to around 100 centimetres tall. It is covered in soft woolly hairs, giving it a silvery-grey appearance. Its leaves are oval to oblong, and it produces small white or pinkish flowers in dense spike-like clusters.

Question 5

Is Aerva javanica found in Sri Lanka's national parks?

Accepted Answer

The plant can be found in and around Sri Lanka's dry-zone protected areas, including scrubland habitats near Wilpattu National Park. It is not a prominent park attraction but may be observed by botanically inclined visitors in the dry lowland vegetation.

Question 6

What are the active compounds found in Aerva javanica?

Accepted Answer

Preliminary phytochemical studies have identified alkaloids, flavonoids, and saponins in Aerva javanica. These compounds are thought to contribute to its traditional medicinal properties, though comprehensive clinical studies are still ongoing and results should not be taken as medical advice.

Question 7

Are there herbal products available from Aerva javanica in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Aerva javanica itself is primarily used in traditional and artisanal herbal practice in Sri Lanka. Its close relative Aerva lanata (Polpala) is more widely commercialised and available as dried herb, herbal tea, and packaged supplements from various Sri Lankan herbal product brands.
