▶️The Legacy of the Warrior Pusadeva

Just before reaching the temple lies the traditional cremation site of Pusadeva, one of the legendary ten giant warriors who fought alongside King Dutugemunu. Renowned for his skill in blowing the conch shell during battle, Pusadeva later became a Buddhist monk and is believed to have attained enlightenment, making this area an important historical and spiritual landmark.

▶️A Temple Built Among Giant Granite Boulders

One of the most unique features of Sankapala Raja Maha Viharaya is its dramatic setting. Visitors climb ancient stone stairways, pass through naturally split granite rocks, and explore shrines built seamlessly into the mountainside. The breathtaking landscape creates a spiritual atmosphere unlike any other temple in Sri Lanka.

▶️Ancient Cave Monastery and Brahmi Inscriptions

The temple complex contains 14 meditation caves, once occupied by Buddhist monks. Ancient Brahmi inscriptions, carved more than two millennia ago beneath the cave drip ledges, provide valuable evidence of early Buddhist monastic life and make this site an important destination for archaeology enthusiasts.

▶️The Story of Venerable Karatota Dhammananda

Sankapala Raja Maha Viharaya is also closely associated with Venerable Karatota Dhammananda Thero, a learned monk who was once imprisoned by King Rajadhi Rajasinha. After recognizing the monk’s extraordinary literary talents, the king granted him the temple and surrounding lands in 1786, a historic event still remembered through ancient records preserved at the temple.

▶️A Hidden Treasure Worth Exploring

Surrounded by ancient trees, towering granite boulders, and peaceful forest, Sankapala Raja Maha Viharaya remains one of Sri Lanka’s most underrated heritage sites.
