Yala National Park sits on Sri Lanka's southeastern coast, where dry monsoon forest, thorny scrubland, savannah grassland, freshwater lagoons, and a fringe of Indian Ocean beach exist side by side across nearly a thousand square kilometres. It is the country's second largest national park, first protected as a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and gazetted as a national park in 1938, and it remains the most visited in the island. This day tour from Hikkaduwa puts you there in an open-top safari jeep, with a licensed tracker-driver reading the terrain alongside you.
The park's most celebrated resident is the Sri Lankan leopard, an endemic subspecies found nowhere else on earth and listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN. Yala's Block 1 — the main safari zone — holds one of the highest leopard densities recorded anywhere in the world, which is why a sighting, while never guaranteed, is genuinely more likely here than almost anywhere else. Beyond the leopard, the park supports an estimated population of several hundred Sri Lankan elephants, wild water buffalo, sloth bear, sambar deer, spotted deer, wild boar, jackal, and estuarine crocodile. Some 215 bird species have been recorded within its boundaries, and the park is formally designated one of Sri Lanka's Important Bird Areas. Block 1 closes annually, typically across September and October, to allow the land to recover; the precise dates vary from year to year, so it is worth confirming current access before you book.
Your day begins with a hotel pick-up in an air-conditioned vehicle driven by an English-speaking chauffeur guide. The road journey takes you across the island to the southeastern coast, where you transfer into an open-top safari jeep with a licensed English-speaking driver who also serves as your tracker throughout the park. One litre of bottled mineral water is provided per person. Park entry permits and jeep access are governed by Sri Lanka's Department of Wildlife Conservation; the option to include park entrance tickets appears at the time of booking — if you select the 'No Tickets' option, you will need to arrange your own permit separately. Food, drinks beyond the water provided, and gratuities are not part of the package.
The tour accommodates guests from the age of five upward and operates as a private experience, so the jeep is yours rather than shared with strangers. The full day runs to around eleven hours from pick-up to drop-off, returning you to your hotel in the evening.
