About this experience
A Wasgamuwa safari from Trincomalee is a full day given over to the dry-zone wilderness that sits neighbouring the historic city of Polonnaruwa. The park is known above all for its elephants, which gather here in substantial herds, and a day spent along its tracks and water pools gives a real chance of watching them at close range alongside the park's leopards, sloth bears, and much else that lives in this tract of tropical dry forest.
Your chauffeur collects you from your hotel in Trincomalee and drives you to Wasgamuwa in an air-conditioned vehicle, with English spoken throughout. At the park you transfer to an open safari jeep with its own English-speaking driver, who also works as your tracker through the scrub and grassland. The terrain alternates between open plains with hills in the distance, wetland fringes thick with water hyacinth, and dense green scrub cut through by dirt tracks, with lakes and rivers drawing wildlife to their edges through the day.
Elephants are the park's signature sighting, often seen in herds at the water's edge or moving through the scrub in family groups, and the evening hours are considered the best time to catch them bathing before dusk. Beyond elephants, Wasgamuwa shelters leopard, sloth bear, purple-faced langur monkey, wild boar, sambar, spotted deer, and buffalo, along with the endemic yellow-fronted barbet among its birdlife. The scattered water pools across the park also support water monitor, crocodile, python, and a range of aquatic birds, giving careful watchers plenty to find beyond the larger mammals.
The tour runs as a full-day safari, departing your Trincomalee hotel at 11.00am and returning you there by around 8.00pm, with morning-only and evening-only options also available if you prefer a shorter window in the park. Park entrance tickets can be included or left out depending on which option you select at booking. The price covers hotel pickup and drop-off, transport in an air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking chauffeur, the safari jeep and its driver-tracker, and a litre of bottled mineral water per person, with food, drinks, and gratuities left to your own arrangement.
November to May is the period most likely to bring large elephant herds into view, though the park holds its resident wildlife year-round. Comfortable walking shoes and a hat are worth having for the time you spend out of the vehicle, and travellers combining this safari with visits to Polonnaruwa or Dambulla will find Wasgamuwa sits conveniently close to both.
