About this experience
Set off from your Tangalle hotel for a six-hour private safari to Udawalawe National Park, one of Sri Lanka's premier wildlife reserves. Your English-speaking chauffeur collects you in an air-conditioned vehicle and drives you to the park, which stretches across 30,821 hectares of open grassland and scrub forest at the foot of the Central Highlands — terrain that regularly draws comparisons to an African game reserve. Udawalawe is home to one of the largest resident elephant populations in the country, and the reservoir at the park's heart pulls herds into the open throughout the day.
Inside the park, you board a dedicated jeep and head out on a guided safari, scanning the plains for elephants, water buffalo, spotted deer, and crocodiles along the reservoir banks. Entrance tickets are purchased separately on arrival, and you are welcome to bring your own food and drinks. With a minimum age of five and a fully private arrangement, this excursion suits families and couples alike who want an unhurried wildlife morning or afternoon from Tangalle, organised by Lakpura.
