About this experience

Set off from Mount Lavinia in a private, air-conditioned vehicle for the roughly 180 km drive south to Udawalawe National Park — one of Sri Lanka's premier wildlife reserves and home to one of the island's largest resident elephant populations. Established in 1972 to protect the catchment of Udawalawe Reservoir, the 30,821-hectare park sits just below the Central Highlands, whose escarpment forms a striking backdrop as you enter. Your English-speaking chauffeur handles all driving, so you arrive ready to explore.

At the park, step into a dedicated jeep with your English-speaking driver-tracker and begin a full safari circuit across open grasslands and woodland. Keep your eyes on the reservoir fringes where elephants gather, and watch for water buffalo, crocodiles, and a rich variety of birdlife. A litre of bottled mineral water per person is provided for the jeep ride. The full day out runs approximately 14 hours, and the tour is operated privately — no shared groups. Note that park entrance tickets, meals, and gratuities are not included.
