About this experience
Board your private, air-conditioned vehicle at your Dikwella hotel and head north to Udawalawe National Park, a 30,821-hectare sanctuary in Sri Lanka's south-central interior. The drive takes you past paddy fields and jungle fringe before the Central Highlands escarpment rises into view — a dramatic curtain behind the park's open grasslands and the broad Udawalawe Reservoir. Your English-speaking chauffeur handles the road so you can start spotting wildlife before the jeep even rolls through the gates.
Inside the park, swap into a dedicated safari jeep and spend time tracking Sri Lanka's densest elephant population as herds gather near the water. Keep your eyes open for water buffalo, crocodiles, spotted deer, and a wide cast of waterbirds. The full day runs seven hours, with hotel drop-off included. Entrance tickets are purchased separately on arrival; bring your own food, drinks, and any personal expenses. Minimum age for this private tour is five years old.
