The Sinhalese

From$41.64

A study of the Sinhalese people, written in English by Nandadewa Wijesekara and published in Colombo by Godage Publishers. It is a substantial single volume, and the sort of book that sits with reference works on Sri Lankan anthropology and history rather than with general reading.

Nandadeva Wijesekera was a Sri Lankan anthropologist and archaeologist who served as Commissioner of Archaeology in Ceylon, and who wrote across a long career on the island's people, art and antiquities. Readers who know his name will already have a sense of the approach: scholarly, wide in scope, and rooted in fieldwork and the archaeological record.

Because the text is in English throughout, it is accessible to readers outside Sri Lanka who cannot read Sinhala, which matters for a subject where a good deal of the literature is not translated. Godage is an established Colombo publisher issuing books in both Sinhala and English, and much of its list is difficult to find outside the country.

Of most use to students and researchers in anthropology, archaeology and South Asian studies, to librarians building a Sri Lanka collection, and to readers of Sinhalese descent abroad who want a serious English-language account of their own background on the shelf.
