About this experience
Step into a coach at your Arugam Bay hotel and spend eight hours visiting eight sites of historical and archaeological significance along Sri Lanka's eastern coast. Your private English-speaking guide leads you through Hulannuge Taru Len Gala Viharaya — home to one of the longest drip-ledged caves in Asia — where primitive cave paintings and resident monks await. From there, the route takes in the fallen monoliths at Lahugala Kotavehera, the ancient Magul Maha Viharaya with its unique moonstone carvings, the cave-dotted Mani Naga Pabbatha Viharaya at Sastrawela, and the over-two-thousand-year-old Kudumbigala Monastery, which preserves the only cylindrical dagoba surviving in Sri Lanka.
The afternoon brings Muhudu Maha Viharaya at Pottuvil, with its ancient stone Buddha and royal statues, the massive Neelagiri Maha Seya — the largest stupa in the Eastern Province — and a final stop at the Okanda Hill Murugan Temple. The vehicle and guide are exclusively yours throughout. Children aged five and above are welcome. Entry tickets and meals are not included, so carry cash for those. Gratuities are at your discretion. Lakpura arranges the coach, the guide, and the full eight-site route.
