About this experience
Rising from the central plains of Sri Lanka, Sigiriya Rock Fortress is among the most remarkable ancient sites in Asia and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built during the reign of King Kashyapa in the fifth century, the great rock served as both a royal palace and an impregnable citadel, its sheer flanks adorned with celebrated frescoes and its summit laid out with formal gardens and audience halls. The climb demands a little effort, but what awaits — sweeping views across jungle canopy and reservoirs, plus layers of history that unfold at every level — repays that effort many times over.
Your English-speaking guide meets you at the main entrance and sets the historical scene straight away as you move through the ticket counter and on to the ticket checkpoint. From there the route opens into the extraordinary water moat, whose scale gives an immediate sense of how ambitious Kashyapa's vision was, before the path leads into the water garden, a finely engineered complex of pools and channels that has survived largely intact. The rock garden that follows is strewn with boulders carved into terraces and steps, and your guide explains the engineering behind them as you make your way towards the lion's paw, the great carved stone claws that once formed the base of a colossal lion gateway framing the final ascent. The climb to the summit rewards you with panoramic views across the surrounding landscape, and on the descent your guide draws attention to the mirror wall, its polished surface still bearing ancient inscriptions left by visitors over more than a thousand years. The route continues into the first courtyard and the audience hall, where the king is believed to have received dignitaries, before finishing at the cobra hood cave with its drip ledge and faded paintings, after which the path leads naturally to the exit.
Lakpura purchases your entrance ticket in advance, so when you arrive you walk straight past the queue at the ticket counter and begin your visit without delay. The full experience runs to around three hours on site. As transport is not part of this booking, guests are asked to arrange their own travel to and from the fortress, and it is worth arriving with enough time before your guide is due to meet you so the visit can start promptly and make the most of the morning light.
