Sethsuwa Mahanarayana Thailaya is a herbal oil made to the classical Maha Narayana formula of Ayurveda, used as an oil for massage into the skin. The name joins Maha, meaning great, with Narayana, the name of the parent formula, and thailaya, meaning oil. It comes in a dark glass bottle with a gold screw cap, packed in a printed carton.
According to the maker, Narayana oil has been used in the Ayurvedic system of medicine for thousands of years, and it is also a good oil for everyday massage. In a classical thaila of this kind, herbs are cooked slowly into an oil base so that the oil takes up their character. In Ayurvedic practice the oil is used for Abhyanga, the traditional full-body oil massage. Sethsuwa makes it at its own Ayurveda hospital in Sri Lanka, and the dark glass bottle keeps light away from the oil.
