Nuwara Kalaviya is the old name for the country around Anuradhapura, in what is now Sri Lanka's North Central Province — the dry-zone district of ancient tanks, irrigated paddy and scattered villages that once formed one of the provinces of the Kandyan kingdom. Anyone who has worked in or travelled through that part of the island knows the name; it carries a particular sense of place that "Anuradhapura District" does not.
This is a short work of regional history by Dr Garvin Karunaratne, a Sri Lankan writer who served in the public administration of his country and has written on Sri Lankan history, administration and development. It is filed under history and civilization, and it is written in English.
It will suit readers with an interest in the regions of Sri Lanka rather than the island as a whole: those researching the dry zone and its settlements, visitors who want background on the Anuradhapura area beyond the monuments, and Sri Lankan readers abroad with family ties to the north central districts.
Published in Colombo by Godage, a Sri Lankan publishing house that issues books in Sinhala and English, including local and regional history of the kind rarely stocked outside the island.
